FIFTEEN NH HIGH SCHOOLS WILL HOST
POETRY OUT LOUD RECITATION COMPETITIONS
For Immediate Release: January 4, 2008
Concord, NH…….This week over 4,000 students from 15 New Hampshire high schools are busy “stopping by the woods on a snowy evening" in preparation for the state’s 2008 Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest (POL). The New Hampshire contests are part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.
Parents, friends, poetry lovers and community members are invited to attend the local high school competitions - which are all open to the public. See the following schedule for participating NH high schools. Visit the State Arts Council on the web at: www.nh.gov/nharts for updates and contact information. Click on the school names below for links to their websites.
The winner of the state competition will receive $200 and an all expenses paid trip to the national competition in Washington, DC, on April 27-29, 2008. Additionally, the winner's school will receive $500 to purchase poetry books. The individual state runner-up will receive $100 with an additional $200 award to his/her school for poetry books.
One winner from each school will advance to the state Poetry Out Loud contest, taking place at Keene State College's Arts Center on Brickyard Pond on Saturday, March 22, 2008, from noon until 5:30 p.m. (snowdate: 3-29-08). The public is invited to attend.
The high school finalists will go on to become the state champion who will compete nationally in Washington, DC, at the Poetry Out Loud finals, where $50,000 dollars in scholarships and school prizes will be awarded. New Hampshire partners for Poetry Out Loud include the NH Writers' Project, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, Keene State College, the Arts Alliance of Northern NH, The Poetry Society of NH, the Frost Place in Franconia and Toadstool Bookstores of Peterborough and Milford.
More details about the program plus many valuable resources are available at the national Poetry Out Loud website: www.poetryoutloud.org
